USCCB criticizes latest version of HHS mandate ‘accommodations’

October 09, 2014

The general counsel of the United States Conference Catholic Bishops has formally responded to the latest version of the HHS mandate, which was released in late August.

“The mandate continues to substantially burden the religious liberty of stakeholders with religious objections to the mandated coverage,” wrote Anthony Picarello, who was joined by the associate general counsel.

“Because it does not further a compelling government interest by the means least restrictive of religious exercise, the mandate continues to violate the Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” he continued.

The latest version, he said, “makes the current situation worse for closely-held for-profit organizations with religious objections to contraceptive coverage.”
