Armed groups attacking Mali from bases in Libya, bishops' spokesman reports

October 06, 2014

The Catholic bishops of Mali have called attention to armed groups that have been forming in Libya to attack their country, the Fides news service reports.

Father Edmond Dembele, a spokesman for the bishops of Mali, said that guerrilla groups that have been driven out of Mali are taking refuge in neighboring Libya, organizing there to carry out attacks on villages in northern Mali and in Niger. He urged international leaders to recognize the need to stabilize the situation in Libya in order to secure the peace in that country’s southern neighbors.
