Pope Francis: the Holy Spirit’s charisms are meant for others

Pope Francis devoted his October 1 general audience to the charisms of the Holy Spirit.
A charism, he said, is more than a personal quality: it is a gift of God, a grace bestowed through the Holy Spirit for the good of the whole community. As an example of a charism, Pope Francis cited work with disabled children by the members of a charitable association present in Paul VI Audience Hall.
Others in the Christian community, Pope Francis continued, recognize and encourage charisms: a Christian might believe he is a good singer, but if everyone finds his singing offensive, then he does not have that gift.
Members of the Church should put charisms into practice with generosity and in service to others, Pope Francis added, neither neglecting charisms nor having pride in them. Citing 1 Corinthians 12, in which St. Paul discusses the Church being composed of many members, the Pope concluded by reflecting on the beauty of the variety of the charisms.
