Focus on unemployment, Italian bishops’ official urges government

September 29, 2014

The secretary-general of the Italian bishops’ conference has called upon the country’s political leaders to devote their attention to unemployment.

Bishop Nunzio Galantino criticized “flag-waving” by politicians and urged a realistic look at the needs of families. “Our impression is that it’s necessary to redesign the political agenda, making the family, jobs, training, and schools the priority,” he said.

The bishop insisted that his statement was a call for social justice, rather than a matter of political commentary. “It’s not a question of whether you like (Prime Minister Matteo) Renzi or not,” he said.

The Italian bishops seem to have a better "focus" than the USCCB. The U.S. bishops seem to be writing Congress about everything but economic policies that will help struggling American families. Foreign aid, health care for all, welfare, and other causes of the left are priorities for the U.S. bishops who chair USCCB committees, but a sound economy and good jobs for U.S. breadwinners don't seem to get their attention.
