Pope takes 2nd day of rest

June 10, 2014

For the 2nd consecutive day, Pope Francis cancelled meetings on Tuesday, June 10, to spend the day resting.

The Vatican press office, which had announced on June 9 that the Pope was recovering from a "mild indisposition," assured reporters that the Pope's physical condition was "nothing to worry about." The Pope was expected to make his regular weekly public audience on Wednesday, June 11.

"It is totally normal for the Pope to rest," said Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office. He pointed out that the Holy Father had kept an unusually busy schedule in the previous few weeks.

The Pope's choice to take extra rest will undoubtedly encourage aides who have been urging him to take a summer vacation. Pope Francis broke with tradition last year by remaining in Rome throughout the summer, eschewing a stay at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
