Bishop denies reports of Christian militias killing Muslims in Central African Republic

February 14, 2014

A Catholic bishop has denied reports that Catholic militia groups have massacred Muslims in the Central African Republic.

“It is not Christian militias who are killing Muslims,” Bishop Juan José Aguirre of Bangassou told the international charity Aid to the Church in Need. There are militias, he said, that “have vented their rage, their hatred,” during the country’s continuing turmoil. But “in no sense” should those groups be identified as Christian.

In fact, Bishop Aguirre reported that “the Christian churches are overwhelmed with Muslims seeking refuge.” Chrisians are striving to protect Muslims from violence, often taking them into their own homes, he said.
