Court approves Kansas City diocese settlement in priest's child-porn lawsuit

November 04, 2013

The Diocese of Kansas City, Missouri, will pay $1.35 million to settle a lawsuit against a priest who has been found guilty of child pornography.

The lawsuit was brought by the parents of a young girl who was photographed by Father Shawn Ratigan. The failure of diocesan officials to alert law-enforcement officials to the evidence of pornography found on the priest’s computer eventually led to the criminal conviction of Bishop Robert Finn.

The court settlement was reached just before the case was due to go to trial. Diocesan officials say that the $1.35 million payment will be covered by insurance.
