Italian Franciscan friar beatified

Fra Tommaso da Olera (1563-1631), a Capuchin Franciscan friar who ministered in Italy and Austria, was beatified in the cathedral of Bergamo, Italy, on September 21.

A lay brother who was illiterate when he entered the order, Blessed Tomasso eventually became an advisor to the Austrian and Bavarian nobility and was known for speaking about the Gospel without a gloss.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, was the principal celebrant at the Mass; concelebrants included the bishops of Bergamo and Innsbruck and the minister general of the Capuchin Franciscan order.
