New Archbishop of Canterbury to be announced tomorrow?
November 08, 2012
Anglican Bishop Justin Welby of Durham will be named tomorrow as the next Archbishop of Canterbury, according to multiple English press reports.
A former oil-industry executive who only became a bishop last year, Dr. Welby is viewed as sympathetic toward the “evangelical” wing of the Church of England and has expressed opposition to same-sex marriage, but is regarded as favorably disposed toward the ordination of women as bishops. His stand on those contentious issues would be crucial to his prospects for success as he replaces Dr. Rowan Williams, who is retiring in December after 10 years as worldwide leader of the Anglican communion.
