USCCB, CRS urge action on Sudan

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are asking Catholics to call upon Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to intensify her efforts on behalf of the Sudanese people.
“The long-term peace and stability of Sudan and South Sudan are at a critical juncture,” the USCCB and CRS note. “In the Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states of Sudan, aerial bombardment, reported attacks on civilians, and a refusal by the Sudanese government to allow international humanitarian aid may lead to large-scale displacement of people and famine.”
The suggested e-mail urges the secretary of state to “ensure that the Administration is engaged in every way possible with the governments of Sudan and South Sudan and with important partner countries and regional bodies to prevent a return to war, to end attacks on civilians, and to protect the basic rights of the Sudanese people, including the freedom of movement and access to humanitarian aid.”
