World Youth Day theme: 'Rejoice in the Lord Always'

March 27, 2012

Pope Benedict XVI has chosen the theme for the 27th observance of World Youth Day (WYD), which will take place at the diocesan level on Palm Sunday, March 27. The theme, taken from St. Paul’s epistle to the Philippians, is “Rejoice in the Lord always.”

“Joy is at the heart of the Christian experience,” notes the message for this year’s observance of WYD. The message goes on to say that the human heart is made for joy, but discernment is needed to recognize real joy as opposed to illusory pleasures.

The real and enduring source of joy is Jesus Christ, the WYD message says. Christians find their joy in Him, and convey it to others so that their neighbors too can know the joy that comes through faith. The message urges young Catholics to maintain that joy even in times of trial and to be “witnesses of joy” to the world.
