Porn merchant angling for Vatican web traffic?

December 22, 2011

An unidentified buyer has purchased the internet address "vatican.xxx," raising the possibility that a pornographic site could occupy that space on the web.

The ".xxx" domains have been established primarily for pornographic material. Many institutions have nevertheless purchased the ".xxx" domain related to their own names, to prevent others from exploiting them. But Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, has confirmed that the Holy See does not own the domain "vatican.xxx" because "it has been acquired by someone else--but not the Vatican."

The Vatican's own web domain is www.vatican.va.

Disgusting, but what's to see here? Anyone typing in an otherwise generic web address and following up with a ".xxx" domain knows they're getting onto a porn site. No sane person could confuse vatican.va with vatican.xxx. That said, I wish someone at the press office had had the foresight to purchase that as soon as the .xxx domain became available a year or so ago, just to get it out of the way -- and redirect, of course, to the legitimate site.
