Shanghai to host beatification of early Catholic convert

April 19, 2011

Paolo Xu Guanggi, one of the first Chinese to accept the faith brought by the Jesuit missionary Matteo Rici in the 16th century, will be beatified in Shanghai.

The scheduling of the beatification ceremony in the Chinese city is being seen at the Vatican as a positive sign, after months of tension between the Holy See and the Beijing regime. Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian of Shanghai was appointed by the Patriotic Catholic Association in 1985, but recognized by Pope Benedict in 2005.
