Cream cheese sandwiches are spruced up by giving a checkerboard design with white and whole wheat bread.

DIRECTIONS

Spread softened butter or cream cheese between 1 whole wheat and 1 white slice, sandwich fashion. Spread softened butter or cream cheese between 2 sandwiches, alternating white and whole wheat bread; press firmly together; trim off crusts. After trimming the crusts, cut each block in 4 lengthwise strips. Stack 3 strips together with softened butter between, so that light and dark breads alternate to form checkerboard design. Wrap each block in wax paper. Chill thoroughly. To serve, slice each block crosswise.
