The greatness and efficiency of the missionary work of St. Francis Xavier in Asia can be seen in each part of the continent. Macao, the only remaining Portuguese colony on the Chinese mainland (Goa is in India) presents an interesting example. In 1602 a cornerstone was laid for a great basilica in Macao, offered by the city of Macao to Our Beloved Lady. The builders and the artists of the church were Japanese Christians. Completed in 1637, the church was considered a wonder of its time. It was destroyed by fire during the 18th century revolts. Nothing remained but the ruined façade, which still speaks of the greatness of the missionary work and of the glory of Mary.

Macao remained faithful to the Blessed Virgin. Many other shrines, among them one to Our Lady of Lourdes, the other Our Lady of Victories on the top of the Bishop's residence testify to this continuous veneration.
