TRUCE OF GOD

Temporary cessation of hostilities in wartime, dating from the eleventh century. It was imposed by the Church under threat of excommunication on the armed forces engaged in feudal battles. Hostilities were prohibited from Saturday night to Monday morning, and also on certain days of the week, notably on Thursday in honor of the Lord's Ascension, and on Friday, the day of his Passion, and also during Advent and Lent.
