SEVEN DEACONS
The first seven helpers ordained by the Apostles to carry on the charitable care of the poor and other material duties, so that the Twelve would not be drawn away from their primary duty of preaching the new faith. St. Stephen, the proto-martyr, was one of their number (Acts 6:1-6).
