SAMUEL, BOOKS OF

The Hebrew title of what the Vulgate calls the First and Second Books of Kings. They contain the history of Samuel and the two kings, Saul and David, whom he anointed. They are the primary source for the history of Israel in the crucial years of the eleventh and tenth centuries before Christ. Three famous poems are included in these books: Hannah's prayer (I Samuel 2:1-10), David's lament (II Samuel 1:19-27), and David's song of triumph (II Samuel 22).
