SALOME

1. daughter of Herod Philip and Herodias. The historian Josephus supplied her name, because in Scripture she is identified only as "the daughter of Herodias." Her dancing at Herod's birthday celebration so delighted him that he promised on oath to give her anything she wanted. At her mother's suggestion she demanded the head of John the Baptist. Reluctantly Herod granted her request (Matthew 14:3-11); 2. named as one of the holy women who witnessed the Crucifixion of Jesus (Mark 15:40). She was probably the wife of Zebedee (Matthew 27:56). On Easter morning she accompanied the same women to Christ's tomb, only to find it empty (Mark 16:1).
