NECROLOGIES

Carefully annotated lists of those who have died in a place or up to a certain time. In many monasteries and religious orders names of deceased brethren are kept as reminders of those to be especially prayed for. Some dioceses keep necrologies of their deceased priests. Medieval necrologies were often kept in book form and became an important source for the history of the Church. The Catholic Directories of many countries, including the United States, contain abbreviated necrologies of priests for a pervious year or longer. (Etym. Greek nekros, corpse + eulogia, good speaking.)
