In the Septuagint and Vulgate, four elegiac poems and one prayer, bewailing the fall of Jerusalem, written by the prophet Jeremiah. The elegies are acrostics, each verse starting with the consecutive letter of the alphabet. Josephus' statement that they were composed after the death of Josiah (608 B.C.) and the claim that Lamentations 4 and 5 date from the Maccabean period are without foundation. They were all composed by Jeremiah after the fall of Jerusalem (586 B.C.).
