JECHONIAH (also spelled Jeconiah, Jeconias, Jehoiachin)
The son and successor of King Jehoiakim of Judah (Jeremiah 24:1). Shortly after ascending the throne in 598 B.C., he was taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar and exiled to Babylon with his family and followers. There is no evidence that he ever returned, although he enjoyed considerable freedom (II Chronicles 36:10). After thirty-seven years of exile he was released from prison by Nebuchadnezzar's successor and was well taken care of for the rest of his life (II Kings 25:27-30).
