HEBREWS, EPISTLE TO THE

A letter, ascribed to St. Paul, written in Rome about A.D. 63. It was addressed to Christians who were almost exclusively converts from Judaism. It is divided into two main parts. Part One is doctrinal (1:1 to 10:17) and tells of the dignity of Christ as the natural Son of God, the eternal priesthood of Christ, the superiority of the Sacrifice of the New Law over the sacrifices of the Old Law. Part Two is moral (10:19 to 13:17), in which the converts are exhorted to perseverance in the Christian faith and in the difficult virtues required by this faith.
