EVESHAM
A Marian shrine in Worcestershire, England, on the Avon River. This is an authentic place of apparition of Our Lady, who in the eighth century appeared to a swineherd named Eoves, sending him to the bishop with a request that a shrine be built to her in the forest nearby. Little is known of the first church, but Lady Godiva (c. 1010-67) rebuilt it completely and it became a favorite place of pilgrimage until the Reformation. A much frequented new shrine has been built by the Catholic people of Evesham and vicinity since World War II.
