DEAD SEA

The body of water that separated Judah and Moab. It is ten miles wide and forty-seven miles long and is more than one thousand feet below sea level. Since it has no outlet, its salt concentration is much greater than that of ocean water. As a result it was called the Salt Sea (Genesis 14:3). Some believe that the destroyed cities of Sodom and Gomorrah lie beneath its waters. A number of references are made to the Salt Sea int he Old Testament (Numbers 34:12; II Chronicles 20:2; Ezekiel 47:18).
