CONGREGATION FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION

An outgrowth of three successive Roman congregations, whose work it has taken over, namely, the Congregation for Studies at the University of Rome (1588), of Studies (1824), and of Seminaries and University Studies (1915). In 1967 Pope Paul VI established the new congregation with three areas of jurisdiction over: 1. seminaries and houses of formation for religious and members of secular institutes; 2. all universities and faculties of higher education under Catholic auspices; and 3. all schools and institutes of education dependent on ecclesiastical authority. Excluded from its competence are those educational institutions and agencies depending on the Congregations for Oriental Churches and Evangelization of Peoples.
