Knowledge or awareness of any kind, whether in the senses or the intellect. It is the power of apprehending within oneself some reality that is outside the faculty of knowing. The result is a representation, within a person of an object, that had previously been outside the knower. (Etym. Latin cognitio, activity of knowing, ability of knowing, knowledge.)
