COEDUCATION

The practice of educating both sexes in the same buildings at the same time. It need not mean identical methods, nor always the same classes, but what it usually implies is the identity of all educational factors without consideration of sex. Such education has become widespread in modern times. Reasons given in favor of coeducation are: economy, beneficial social relations, and in some instances improved discipline. Objections arise on psychological and physiological grounds especially in the upper grades. The Catholic Church's position has been one of reserve, pointing out the different needs of men and women and the corresponding risk of homogenizing what nature and grace intend to be complementary genders in human society.
