BRIGITTINES

The order founded by St. Brigit of Sweden (1303-73) in 1334 and officially known as the Order of the Most Holy Savior. Based on the Rule of St. Augustine, its membership was first organized in double communities of men and women, living separately but using the same chapel. This arrangement was given up in the sixteenth century. There are also Brigittines of the Recollection, but the nuns' form of this group has disappeared.
