BERENGARIANISM

The heresy of Berengarius of Tours (999-1088), French theologian who denied transubstantiation while professing some form of real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. He was required to make a profession of faith in the Real Presence by the Council of Rome in 1079. This Eucharistic creed has been frequently quoted by the popes, notably by Pope Paul VI in the encyclical Mysterium Fidei (1965).
