AUREOLE
Oval rays of light visible at times about the sun or moon. Adopted in the Middles Ages as a symbol of the heavenly honor of the saints, it represented the glory attached to their persons. It is to be distinguished from a halo or nimbus. In early times it was used only with representations of God.
