AUGUSTINE, RULE OF ST

Name popularly applied to the Regula Sancti Augustini, drawn up by one of the disciples of St. Augustine (354-430) but based on St. Augustine's directives to two groups of consecrated persons: clerics whom Augustine formed into a monastic community, and nuns to whom he wrote a famous letter outlining their way of life (A.D. 423). Not much used after Augustine's death, the rule was resuscitated in the late eleventh century and has since been adopted by many monastic and contemplative bodies, including the Dominicans, the Servites, and the Visitation nuns.
