A California court has ordered the public release of depositions by Cardinal Roger Mahony and other officials of the Los Angeles archdiocese in a notorious sex-abuse cases.

Stand by. The grand jury may not have found enough admissible evidence to sustain criminal charges (and doesn't the statute of limitations come in handy sometimes?), but Cardinal Mahony may still be squirming when the public has its first look at 600-pages-worth of depositions on a sex-abuse case in which archdiocesan officials apparently failed to report a pedophile priest.

Tod Tamberg, the cardinal's spokesman, says that there won't be anything new in the depositions: nothing that hasn't already been discussed in the press. Maybe not. But unless you've already plowed through 600 pages of newspaper reports, you're likely to find a nugget or two. Prelates have often experienced severe discomfort when their sworn testimony on such cases has been exposed to daylight. Ask Cardinal Law.
