Herewith the key part of the Vatican's statement on Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado:

After submitting the findings of the investigation to careful study, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, under the direction of the new Prefect, His Eminence Cardinal William Levada, decided -- taking into consideration the advanced age of Fr. Maciel and his delicate health -- to forego a canonical trial and to invite the Father to a life restricted to prayer and penance, renouncing any public ministry. The Holy Father has approved these decisions.

Apart from the person of the Founder, the worthy apostolate of the Legionaries of Christ and the association of Regnum Christ is acknowledged with gratitude.
