From an AP story headlined LA Archdiocese tries to keep abuse-case records private:

Lawyers for the archdiocese said Cardinal Roger Mahony had favored openness, but his legal advisers had overruled him.

Now think. What's wrong with this picture?

his eminence hasn't learned the lesson of watergate, et al. the coverup is worse than the crime when it hits the papers. the dirty laundry will all come out eventually. the moral authority of the bishops (and cardinals) is already in the trash can. pray that roger sees his actions only confirm the public suspicion that the US catholic leadership has either abused the kids or covered up for those who did or both.

When I switched to this screen name a few months ago, my purpose was to needle the Cardinal. But the question has become real. The red hat motor mouth with an opinion about everything has largely disappeared from view. At a time when there is so much to commment on in California we all ask: "Where's Roger?" Personally, I think he is preparing his next legal defense (hint: My next screen name might be:Where's the Money, Roger?)

I have never been able to verify, and I hope someone "in the know" will help. But, I was told that Cardinal Roger conspired to dump the whole sex-abuse scandal into the lap of Cardinal Law for 2 reasons. The ultra-"liberal" cardinal wanted to oust the "conservative" Cardinal. His ultra-"liberal"-ness wanted to draw all attention away from himself by focusing it elsewhere, so himself could duck out of the limelight. We shall see how successful the tactic proves to be, if the info was actually true.

I don't know if this is pertinent to the issue, but Mahoney, who was responsible for Patrick Zieman's rise to Bishop of Santa Rosa where he bankrupt the Diocese with his homosexual hanky-panky, has (with the help of his crony Bishop Moreno) seen to it that Zieman is languishing in the Benedictine Monastery just south of Tucson counseling young men aspiring to the priesthood. I would think that any documents referring to that outrage would be incriminating.

I agree with jchrysostom, wasn't there a large number of emails that were leaked to the press written by Mahony that showed sympathy for the accused and irritation with the accusers?

What's wrong that the claim it is totally false. I know this based on information given to me, not in confidence, but in a moment of outrage by one who has seen the documents. The information Mahony is desperate to keep secret, and not because his lawyers "overruled him," is his correspondence with the many, many perverts in the LA Arch. showing not only a .... queer solicitude for the pedophiles, but an EMPATHY for the active homo priests also mentioned in the documents.

Either the lawyers or Mahony is in the role of WormTongue in The Two Towers. The question is: Which one?
