A light dawns

By Fr. Wilson ( articles ) | Jun 21, 2003

Word from St Louis today is that yesterday's session of the bishops' meeting was devoted to identifying problems in the Church's life which have been disclosed by the turmoil of these months. They focused on such matters as the decline in Mass attendance and coinfession, the "confused" sense of identity and spirituality of many clergy, and the corrosive effects of our culture on faith.

I wish they would add another point to ponder: why has it taken so long for them to begin having this conversation, so that it's portrayed as some kind of turning point when they wake up to the existence of a Church-wide crisis forty years into it?
