Recent developments have once again raised the question of when to praise and when to blame Church leaders.

A perfect case involves nearly 2,000 converts from Islam who took exception to Pope Francis’ constant positive portrayals of that religion.

Pope Francis routinely insists that authentic religion is always good and peaceful while assuming without discussion that Islam is authentic religion. This is strategy, of course, but the results are decidedly mixed.

Proper distinctions are so very necessary. The need for them affects my own judgments about which religious leaders do a good job, and which do not. See: The priorities of Catholic leadership today, and how they must influence praise and blame.
