eNewsletter Subject: In Praise of Discernment

Pope Francis speaks often of discernment, and the Lord knows too few of us habitually engage in active discernment. I recall St. Paul’s dictum:

“Do not quench the Spirit...but test everything; hold fast what is good, abstain from every form of evil.” [1 Thes 5:19-22]

St. Paul’s idea, I think, is that we do not discern the Faith for ourselves; that must be preached by those who are sent (refer to Romans 10:14-15).

Rather, we discern whether the truth is being honored and supported or twisted and distorted within the various situations of life.
