Earlier today, Pope Francis issued a motu proprio revising the name and the purposes of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family. The Institute is just thirty-six years old.

This latest change may or may not be a cause for alarm, depending on whether you think the current Pope's passion for discernment will provide a cover for many unfortunate alliances and initiatives. Time will tell.

Clearly discernment is very important to figure out the root of various problems and how best to address them, reducing the likelihood of alienation, and increasing the prospects for true spiritual growth.
