eNewsletter Subject: Renewal pros and cons

Please note: I will be out of town on Friday, so there will be no Friday Insights message. Also, last week I highlighted Cardinal Sarah's address at our National Prayer Breakfast. Oops! That address was given last year. Apologies.

Today I'd like to take a page from Pope Francis' book and suggest that it may be the right time again to make our parishes the center of a vibrant Catholic and community life. See Renewal Phase 2: Making the parish central again.

Also, as we think more about our role in renewal, perhaps it is time to mention one of the things that can go wrong despite the best of intentions. See: The perils of “apostolic necessity”: The soul of the apostolate is Presence.

In the interest of helping the bishops along, here are two news stories where bishops are rightly concerned, but with problems that they should never have let develop in the first place. Unfortunately, many episcopal conferences have been empowering the wrong people for decades:
