A quick review:
* Howell Raines supervises the reporters of the New York Times. One reporter misbehaves, Raines is charged with inadequate supervision, a public furor arises, and Raines is forced to resign.
" Bishop O'Brien supervises the clergy of the Phoenix diocese. Many clerics misbehave, O'Brien is charged with inadequate supervision if not active complicity, a public furor arises, and O'Brien is informed that the Vatican will not accept his resignation.
The Vatican allegedly fear that a bishop's resignation could raise the perception that the Church can be influenced by public opinion. Funny: the Times didn't seem much worried by that possibility.
