A call for charity and measured dialogue

By Diogenes ( articles ) | Jun 14, 2003

The Washington Post reports that National Review Board member Bill Burleigh disagrees with Governor Keating:

Burleigh said Keating's remark about La Cosa Nostra was a mistake. "I don't in any way agree with that characterization because most of the bishops are either cooperating or struggling for ways to cooperate with the study, and it's the minority, such as Cardinal Mahony, that up until recently have been dragging their feet," he said.

A fair-minded person has to ask whether, in last analysis, Burleigh may not be correct. Cardinal Mahony is not to be compared to a mafioso staying mum on the witness stand; as the "foot-dragging" image suggests, he is better pictured as dangling between the arms of two arresting officers, who are lugging him, unwilling, into the waiting paddy wagon.
