PRISCILLA

The wife of Aquila, a Jew of Pontus and, like St. Paul, a tentmaker. She is frequently mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 18:2, 18:18, 18:26; Romans 16:3; I Corinthians 16:19; II Timothy 4:19). In the Pauline letters the more proper name is Prisca. both she and her husband were prominent lay associates of the Apostle to the Gentiles, and in this capacity lived at Rome, Ephesus, and Corinth. They were forced to leave Rome during the persecution by Emperor Claudius. The Cemetery of Priscilla on the Via Salaria in Rome is one of the oldest catacombs but almost certainly not related to the biblical saints Aquila and Priscilla. (Etym.
