Indian archbishop: No ‘sheep stealing’ from other Christians

December 15, 2009

Describing “sheep stealing” as “very visible and threatening to Church unity,” Archbishop Leo Cornelio of Bhopal and 100 other Christian leaders in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh have agreed not to attempt to convert other Christians or criticize other ecclesial communities. Located in a strongly Hindu area, the Archdiocese of Bhopal has fewer than 19,000 Catholics-- only 0.5% of the local population.

So the good archbishop wants to leave non-Catholic Christians out in the cold, secure in their errors? How does that express Christ's love for them? How does accepting the scandalous divisions brought about by the Protestant rebellion advance Christian unity?

I am sure that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) are NOT among those who signed up for this agreement. They are sending missionaries to places that have previously been dominated by one religion, for example, to Greece, where the predominant majority of the population is Greek Orthodox. Fortunately, the Mormons have had few, if any, converts in places like Greece and their work is mostly among foreigners. Let's hope that this wise agreement in India holds fast.

We shouldn't criticize other ecclesial communities, but surely the Church's mission is to conversion? Quite simply, Church unity must mean that all should be Catholic.

If I were a bishop (God help us), I'd announce, "It's a really beautiful and wonderful thing to be a member of the Catholic Church! Look at these great sacraments! You're welcome to come join us!" But for various good reasons I'll never be a bishop.
