Church leaders defend Australian premier on canonization inquiry

Catholic officials in Australia have come to the defense of Prime Minister Kevin Ruddd, after the premier was criticized for saying that he planned to speak about the prospects for canonization of Blessed Mary MacKillop during a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI. Critics had said that Rudd was contemplating an unwarranted interference in Church affairs. Rudd had said that he only plans to tell the Pope that the Australian people are looking forward eagerly to the canonization of their countrywoman.
