Republican lawmakers rap Obama, Clinton for downgrading human-rights concern in China policy

February 25, 2009

Three Republican members of the US House of Representatives have joined in scolding Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her suggestion that human-rights issues will no longer play a major role in determining US policy toward China. Congressmen Chris Smith of New Jersey, Frank Wolf of Virginia, and Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania strongly objected to Clinton's suggestion that concerns of economic welfare and climate change would take precedence. Calling that approach "a shocking display of pandering," Congressman Smith charged that "the Obama Administration has chosen to peddle U.S. debt to the largest dictatorship in the world over combating torture, forced abortion, forced labor, religious persecution, human sex trafficking, 'gender-cide,' and genocide."
