Catholic hospital sued for denying health insurance to lesbian in civil marriage

Less than a year after New York State legalized same-sex marriage, a lesbian who works for St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers has filed suit against the hospital for refusing to grant spousal health insurance benefits to the woman with whom she contracted a civil marriage.
Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, the administrator of the hospital’s health plan, was also named in the lawsuit.
