defunding the Left, one step at a time

By Diogenes ( articles ) | Sep 17, 2009

After the latest scandal involving ACORN-- the report that the Alinsky-style community-organizing group was willing to provide support to local entrepreneurs setting up a brothel-- the US Senate voted 83- 7 to cut off funding for the group. The House of Representatives is likely to follow suit today.

So Congress has reached the decision to terminate support for the leftist group-- just a year after the US bishops made the same decision, turning off the spigot that had poured over $1 million into ACORN coffers through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD).

Now if we can only convince the CCHD to stop subsidizing other leftist groups that support abortion and homosexuality, maybe next year we Congress will take that step, too.

Year after year, earnest American bishops have encouraged the faithful to chip in to the CCHD collection despite the evidence that it has become a funding mechanism for leftists-- because it does so much good, you know. Their arguments may be having an impact. Among those 7 lonely senators who voted against cutting off funding for ACORN, a majority were Catholics.
