New York archdiocese to close 27 schools

January 12, 2011

Citing declining enrollment and rising costs, the Archdiocese of New York has announced that it will close 26 Catholic elementary schools and one Catholic high school. 4,700 students are affected.

The 27 schools had received subsidies of $10 million this year, according to an archdiocesan spokesman; the archdiocese’s other 189 schools had received a combined $13 million in subsidies.
