Ontario: Catholic teachers' union supports gay-rights advocacy

December 21, 2010

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), with 45,000 members, has provided support for Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere (EGALE), a group that has worked for legal acceptance of same-sex marriage and denounced a Catholic bishop as a “religious extremist,” LifeSite News reports.

A spokesman for OECTA refused to answer a question about the organization’s support for the gay activists, but pointed to a policy statement in which the group “denounces all threats to life such as euthanasia, abortion, capital punishment, genocide, racism, sexism and homophobia.”

According to the article, the bishops don't provide religious training for teachers, too. If true, this is yet another blatant example of the clergy failing to do their jobs and a laity that should know better. What of the children in Catholic schools, too?

At least there is one good reason for not having Catholic teacher unions in the United States.
